Enamel Jewelry

Enamel jewelry stands as a true testament to the fusion of art and craftsmanship in the world of high-end fine jewelry. The history of enamel jewelry is a fascinating tale that spans centuries, and it continues to captivate jewelry enthusiasts worldwide.

True enamel (as opposed to cold enamel or resin) is the process of carefully applying fine, colored glass powders to precious metal, and then firing the piece to turn the powder into a rich glass decoration that adheres to the metal. Many, many firings are required between powder applications, and the various techniques are performed by highly specialized craftspeople, of which there are very few.

Enamel jewelry has its origins in ancient civilizations. The Egyptians, for instance, were among the first to experiment with enameling techniques over 5,000 years ago. They used enamel to adorn their jewelry, creating vibrant and intricate designs.

Today the art of enamel jewelry is seeing a resurgence, since there is no limit to the colors that can be created with it, which never fade. When made properly, enamel jewelry is about as delicate as a colored-stone ring in terms of knocking or dropping, so most wearers do well with it with appropriate care.

Alara loves the fine art of enamel jewelry, and we are proud to carry multiple designers who are specialized in it...you can even have us work on a bespoke enamel piece for you.
